Lyttelton Icon -- 100 Years of the Steam Tug Lyttelton by Nick Tolerton
The historic tug Lyttelton's working career for the Lyttelton Harbour Board spanned the age of sail to the container era, and she is still going strong running passenger cruises for the Tug Lyttelton Preservation Society.
This publication by NZ Ship & Marine Society member Nick Tolerton commissioned by the Tug Society to mark the tug's centenary tells the tug's fascinating story.
She was built on the Clyde the same year the Lusitania was launched and in her early days handled the Antarctic expedition ships of Scott and Shackleton, and was requisitioned by the Navy in World War Two.
When the board pensioned her off, the Tug Society was formed and saved her from the breakers. Keeping the ship going for 100 years has not been without a few hiccups, and as well as a comprehensive history of the tug, this book is full of reminiscences and anecdotes from seafarers who worked on her in her Lyttelton Harbour Board days and who have kept her afloat for the society.
48 pages, A4 size, softback, 34 colour and 24 B&W illustrations. Special price to NZS&MSoc members, $25 plus $3.50 P&P (for Australia, NZ$25 plus NZ$7.64 P&P).
