The major shipper of newsprint (Tasman Pulp & Paper) preferred to ship rolls of newsprint on end instead of on the bilge as done on these two ships and built two ships for their own use. Despite the loss of this cargo both ships carried on for a number of years as successful cargo carriers. First USSCo cargo ships to have radar fitted at time of building.
