USS American Legion preparing for war

About this Image

DescriptionBuilt at Camden, New Jersey, as a passenger ship in 1921. Length: 163 metres. Displacement: 13,529 t. Draft: 9.63 metres. Twin screw steam turbine. Speed: 17.5 kts. Troop Capacity:1700. Began commercial service between New York and South America in 1926. Laid up in early 1939 due to financial difficulties but was soon taken over by the War Department for use as the U.S. Army Transport. Photo shows AMERICAN LEGION undergoing conversion to a Navy transport, at the Atlantic Basin Iron Works, New York, on 28 August 1941. She appears to be undergoing repainting from her white U.S. Army Transport color scheme.
On 20 May 1942, Wellington saw the first arrival of some ships that were to become legendary to Wellingtonians. That day USS AMERICAN LEGION and USS NEVILLE berthed at Aotea Quay. They were followed 2 days latter by NEVILLE'S sister ship USS FULLER and the converted Grace liner USS McCAWLEY and a sister ship to AMERICAN LEGION - HUNTER LIGETT. These 5 ships arrived virtually empty with only a small amount of cargo mainly trucks, jeeps and landing craft having unloaded the bulk of their cargo in Tonga.
