Additional NotesMournful ships' sirens at Lyttelton on June 1 2003 marked the end of 128 years of New Zealand nautical history. The former Union Shipping tug KARAMEA and the giant coal barge UNION BULK 1, were sailing for the Middle East after purchase by Kuwaiti owners. They were the last vessels owned by Union Shipping, which as the Union Steam Ship Co was for many years New Zealand's biggest company, employing thousands of seafarers and shore staff. Both vessels had remained laid up in Lyttelton for a number of years.
